Acrylic, also known as PMMA or organic glass, is derived from the English word "acrylic plastic" and its chemical name is polymethyl methacrylate.

Sheets derived from transparent plastics such as PS and PC, or from low-quality recycled MMA, are collectively referred to as organic glass. For the sake of distinction, PMMA sheets made from pure MMA are referred to as acrylic sheets to distinguish them from conventional plexiglass sheets.
